Lancaster County Fire Chief Dies

LANCASTER, SC – Lancaster County council released the following statement in regards to the death of Fire Chief Dennis Cauthen this morning: 

With great regret and sorrow, we announce the death of Elgin Fire Department Chief Dennis J. Cauthen at age 54. 

Chief Cauthen responded to assist with a structure fire at a vacant building at 937 15th St. around 2:45 AM.  The Elgin firefighters cleared the scene and were at their station at 5:55 AM.  Shortly thereafter, Chief Cauthen began feeling bad.  His fellow firefighters called for EMS and began administering medical attention.  The Lancaster County EMS was dispatched to the fire station and transported Chief Cauthen to Springs Memorial Hospital.  Chief Cauthen passed away at approximately 8:00 AM this morning.

Chief Cauthen was a 31 year veteran of the fire service.  He is survived by his mother and father, his wife Teresa, three children and four grandchildren.

At this time the exact funeral arrangements have not been set.  Further information will be released as it is made available to us.  Please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
