CHARLOTTE, NC- Dozens of women exposed online are taking action tonight. Revenge porn sites allow former lovers to upload explicit pictures of their exes without their knowledge. "I was holding my breathe, I was crying, I was just paranoid as to how they got there," said Hollie Toups, a Beaumont, Texas resident. Topless pictures Toups sent to her now ex-boyfriend ended up on a revenge porn site for thousands to see -- along with her name and contact info. "You try to be a good person and then someone comes along and with one click of a button, they've erased all the good you've done with this one awful, negative thing," said Toups. At first, she isolated herself. Now, hollie's seeking revenge. Toups and more than 30 other women are part of a class-action lawsuit. Some of the women think hackers posted x-rated photos of them, many know it was an ex, while others have no idea who exposed them. The women are suing the revenge porn site where their pictures showed up, along with the site host and even its subscribers. They say the site is an invasion of privacy designed to humiliate. "If there's actual emotional distress inflicted and damages there, then I think it's pretty easy to show the willfullness and malice that's required to bring action against that ex-boyfriend," said civil litigator James Galvin. Galvin, who's not involved in the lawsuit, warns it's not easy to go after cyber-creeps.He says the law has not caught up with technology, which makes sending x-rated photos even more risky. "You should think twice about ever doing anything like that," said Galvin. Once you hit send, you can't control where the pics show up. The revenge porn site involved in the lawsuit was taken down - But there are others. More than 1,400 people have signed an online petition to make the sites illegal. |
