Women in the Car Industry
Charlotte, NC - "I cant think of anybody or not many people who say, I hope my little girl grows up to be a new car manager at a car dealership." The words of a pensive car dealership owner. It turns out, Cyndie Mynatt, owner of the Charlotte area Ben Mynatt dealerships is one of the few women living that dream. She says, "Its a retail business, so its long hours. We're open when other people are off." She goes on to say, "But you know, I've always thought, well real estate is another one of those industries that probably has worse hours than we do. Certainly the malls are open 7 days a week, we're only open 6, you see women in all of those industries." Global research firm “Catalyst” says, that's not the case with women and the automotive industry. Catalyst says last year about 25 percent of all employees in the business were women. When it comes to upper management that number drops to 16 percent. Owners like Cyndie only make up two percent... Which begs the question, why! Mynatt believes, “Juggling family, that might be one thing because a woman has a different role often times in raising the family." Shattick adds, "I think a lot of women are intimidated by it and it just doesn't fit with what a lot of women want to achieve in their life."
