Colo. authorities report tornado; 5 homes goneEADS, Colo. (AP) — At least five homes were destroyed after as many as three rare nighttime tornadoes reportedly ripped through sparsely populated areas in southeastern Colorado. The state emergency management division says the tornadoes were reported early Friday in Prowers, Kiowa and Bent counties. Theresa Brown of Chivington says there was no warning before her house was destroyed. Prowers County authorities confirmed four other homes were destroyed. Authorities in Lamar say they spotted a large and fast tornado that left at least two people injured. Kiowa County authorities rescued a resident trapped in a home near Chivington. Forecasters say tornadoes are rare overnight in Colorado, when the temperature drops. The severe weather hit after near record highs in the 80s. Heat creates instability in the atmosphere that can lead to severe storms. |
