CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — William "Bill" Friday, who helped shape the modern University of North Carolina system during his 30-year tenure as its president, has died. He was 92.

Virginia Taylor, his special assistant, says he died in his sleep on Friday morning at his home in Chapel Hill, the city that is also home to the UNC system's flagship campus.

William Link, who authored a biography about Friday, says the man known even after he stepped down as "President Friday" was critical in helping to build the 16-campus system that exists today.

Friday was just 35 when he was offered the position of president in 1956 and didn't initially expect to serve more than a few months. He wound up staying until 1986.
