Futures move higher on strong earnings

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock futures are rising as U.S. corporate profits continue to impress.

Dow Jones industrial futures are up 57 points to 14,672. The broader S&P futures have added 5.4 points to 1,579.50. Nasdaq futures are up 11.25 points to 2,835.25.

On top of strong earnings from the likes of Harley-Davidson, Southwest Airlines and Dow Chemical, the government is expected to release new jobs data Thursday pointing to modest, but consistent job recovery.

Economists surveyed by FactSet predict that applications for unemployment benefits fell last week to a seasonally adjusted 351,000. The Labor Department will release the report at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

Also reporting earnings Thursday are UPS, United Continental, Starbucks and Expedia.

Markets are up overseas as well.
