Parents Get Help Finding Gun Poses On FacebookCHARLOTTE, NC - Posing with guns is one of the newest fads on social media sites. Many parents are struggling when it comes to tracking every post, tag and link. Now, new software is finding online gun photos and informing parents. Children holding guns in their Facebook photos. While "gun and poses" is not illegal local parents like Latrina Worsley says it's alarming, "It's making people think its okay for children to take pictures with guns and its like promoting violence." Which is why parents are turning to EyeGuardian. EyeGuardian, by ImageVision is software that aims to find those gun related photos and alerts parents. Local parents like Crystal Tyson think it is a great concept, "You don't know what there doing on there, to have a program where you can be updated is awesome." When the gun recognition software recognizes the image of a gun on a Facebook page, it sends out an alert and report to the person who is monitoring that page. EyeGuardian Co-Founder, Mitch Butler says each day there is a 24 hour report, "It comes to the parent by email or text, the parent is then alerted and they can look at all the photos on the kids Facebook or they can just look at those that are 'suspect'." Posse Social Media Co-Founder, Tracy Alves says the flip side of the software comes down to privacy concerns, "There is always going to be this give and take battle with children, but all in all if it protects them down the road, it's a viable tool that parents should be using." Although not everyone is on board, local teenagers say the want their own privacy and here should be a trust situation between the parent and the child. Still, when that trust isn't there, parents like Worsley are getting a little help navigating their child's social media years, "It will make me feel safe as a parent that I get alerts that my child posted a picture with a gun, then I can discipline them." There are also companies that can alert you to drug language on social mediate sites, suspect people trying to "friend" your child and ones that look for pictures or videos that contain nudity. |
