PARKLAND, T.X.--A transgender woman says she was ticketed for using the women's restroom at a hospital.  Police say they cited Paula Witherspoon for disorderly conduct.

Paula's legal name is Paul Witherspoon.  Hospital officials say they received a complaint that a man was inside the woman's restroom.

Witherspoon says she has been in transition since 2006 and even offered to show a letter from her doctor that states, "She is expected to use facilities consistent with her external presentation, which is female."

Parkland Police said they had to go by the name on her license.

The hospital released this statement, "Because of the complexity of the issue, the incident is currently under review. Parkland strives to treat patients, visitors and staff with dignity and respect, as well as provide a safe environment at all times."
