CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Hurricane Irene has prompted a change in itinerary for the only cruise ship based in South Carolina.
The Carnival Fantasy is loading in Charleston on Thursday. But, because of the approaching storm, it will not sail to Bermuda as planned.
Instead, the Carnival will skirt the storm and visit Cozumel, Mexico, on Sunday and Key West, Fla., on Monday. The Fantasy returns to Charleston next Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center has posted a tropical storm watch for most of the South Carolina coast, meaning that winds of more than 39 mph could occur within two days.
Irene is projected to move over the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Saturday.
