WADESBORO, N.C. (AP) — A Wadesboro police officer has been suspended after authorities say he improperly disposed of meth lab materials.

WSOC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/w3AAYP ) that a relative of the officer brought a plastic bottle and tubing to the officer's home when he was off duty. Chief Janie Schutz says the bottle allegedly belonged to a woman already in jail on drug charges.

Schutz the officer didn't know what to do, so he called a drug detective and opted to dispose of the material instead of handing it over to the State Bureau of Investigations, which is the proper agency to safely dispose of hazardous meth materials.

Schutz says police are conducting an internal investigation. She also wants the State Bureau of Investigations to probe the issue.
