CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — A North Carolina man faces two potential life sentences in the fatal shootings of two people in Virginia.

Charles Collins is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 28, 2013.

Media outlets say the 45-year-old Pollocksville, N.C., resident pleaded guilty Friday in Chesapeake Circuit Court to two first-degree murder counts, four abduction counts and several weapons charges.

Deputy Public Defender A. Robinson Winn says his client accepted a plea agreement to avoid the death penalty.

Prosecutors say Collins fatally shot his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend, 40-year-old Michael Temple of Elizabeth City, N.C., and her son, 19-year-old Derwin Watts II of Chesapeake, on April 22.

A police SWAT team shot and wounded Collins during a standoff.
