RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — LaChaston Smith scored his third touchdown with 19 seconds left to lift South Iredell to a 30-27 victory over Carrboro on Saturday night in the Class 2-AA North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.
Smith, the game's MVP, finished with 152 yards rushing for South Iredell (14-2).
Quarterback Alex McVeigh rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns for Carrboro (15-1), and his 12-yard scoring run with 2:37 left put Carrboro up 27-23.
Quarterback Davin King and Smith led South Iredell downfield, moving 62 yards in eight plays. King found Scott Miller for a 19-yard gain to the Carrboro 1, and three plays later, Smith scored the game-winner.
Smith had scoring runs of 26 and 2 yards in addition to his 1-yarder.
McVeigh also was 8 of 20 for 172 yards for Carrboro.
