NC State history weekend features Civil War expert
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Civil War historian is delivering a lecture as part of the history weekend at North Carolina State University.
James McPherson delivers the main lecture on Saturday at Withers Hall. The topic of his talk is "Lincoln's Legacy for Our Time."
McPherson says the lecture focuses on how President Abraham Lincoln's leadership in the cause of Union and freedom not only invoked the ideals of liberty, democracy, and nationalism inherited from the American Revolution, but also redefined those ideals for the future.
McPherson, who wrote "Battle Cry of Freedom," has also written about abolition and Reconstruction.
The weekend, sponsored by the school's history department, continues on Sunday with a showing of the movie "Glory" at the N.C. Museum of History.
