Kinston downs Cuthbertson 56-53 for 2A state title


CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Denzel Keves had 18 points and 10 rebounds to take Kinston to a 56-53 victory over Cuthbertson Saturday to capture the Class 2-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association men's championship.

Josh Brandon had 12 points, seven rebounds and five rebounds for Kinston (28-2), and Brandon Ingram added 12 points and three blocked shots.

Shelton Mitchell had 22 points on 9-of-22 shooting to lead Cuthbertson. Isiah Cureton had nine points and Justin Austin had eight points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Kinston trailed by three entering the fourth quarter but went on a crucial 9-2 run to take control. Dawson put Kinston ahead for good at 43-42 with a layup with seven minutes left to play. Andrew Lopez followed with two free throws before Dawson added another layup and Jeremy Taylor knocked down a jumper.

Kinston shot 46 percent from the field and created 14 turnovers in the win.
