Wake Forest program receives $6.5 million gift

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A Florida couple has given $6.5 million to the Magnolia Scholars program at Wake Forest University.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports (http://bit.ly/10B14sp) the gift will pay for students at Wake Forest who are first-generation college students.

Dr. Steven Scott and Becky Scott of Boca Raton, Fla., made the donation.

It's the second largest gift to a scholarship program by individuals in Wake Forest history.

An earlier gift by the couple helped establish the Magnolia Scholars program in 2009. It has helped 120 students so far.

School president Nathan Hatch says the program opens the door for students with "considerable potential and few resources."
