NC mayor announces he's filed for bankruptcy

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins has announced that he's filed for bankruptcy, a move he blames on the economy and his pending divorce.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports ( that Perkins announced his decision on Friday in a statement to the newspaper. He wouldn't answer questions about the bankruptcy, and no paperwork could be immediately found.

Perkins is a partner at NAI Piedmont Triad, a real estate firm that has suffered in the recession. He has also been in a prolonged legal battle with his estranged wife, Carole Perkins. They have been separated since 2011.

Carole Perkins asked a judge last month to hold Robbie Perkins in contempt of court for failing to pay post-separation and child support. He has until later this month to respond to her claims.
