WILKESBORO, N.C. (AP) — A memorial service will be held for the North Carolina judge who drowned while trying to rescue others off a Brunswick County beach.

Miller Funeral Service says the service for 54-year-old Chief District Court Judge Mitchell McLean will be Monday at the Walker Center at Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro.

McLean died Wednesday while trying to help a husband and wife struggling in the water off Sunset Beach. The woman he was trying to save also died, and authorities blamed rip currents for the deaths.

Surviving include his wife, Elizabeth Fincannon McLean; two sons, 14-year-old Jackson McLean and 12-year-old Fin McLean both of the home; and his mother, Pauline McLean.

McLean was chief District Court judge for a district that includes Wilkes, Ashe, Alleghany and Yadkin counties.
