With the 26th pick in the 3rd round (89th overall), the Carolina Panthers selected Appalachain State QB Armanti Edwards.

However, Edwards is expected to play WR / KR / PR and maybe even in some wildcat packages for Carolina.

The Panthers acquired the pick from from Arizona via New England by trading their 2nd round pick for 2011.

Edwards recently discussed being drafted by Carolina:

INTERVIEW: Panthers GM Marty Hurney Discusses Draft

On being drafted in third round

My agent told me anywhere between third round and fifth round and my best chances were in the fourth round, so I was anticipating the fourth round. I had Carolina in my mind, but my agent told me the teams that showed the most interest more than likely weren’t the ones that would get me. It’s kind of surprising.

On being from the area and playing college ball in NC and now pro ball here

It means a lot. I’m staying close to home so I’ll get to see my family a lot and they’ll get to come to a lot of the games, so it means a lot.

On playing wide receiver

It will be quite an adjustment getting the routes down and the wide receiver concept, but at the same time, I have a little bit of knowledge from playing quarterback, so I can get the coverages down pretty quickly. It will still be an adjustment because it is the NFL.

On playing special teams

There were plenty of teams talking about playing special teams, so I’ve been trying to practice catching kicks and punts also. Everybody likes my athletic ability, so if I get comfortable with returning kicks, I think I can be pretty good at it.

On not getting to play quarterback

It’s not disappointing at all. You have to be thankful that somebody picked you up to bring you to their team. I’m willing to play any position they need me to.

On Panthers interest

I talked to them a few times and I had a private workout with them, so they showed interest. I thought they were showing a little interest and they are close to home, but you never know who will pick you up.

On being surprised

When I saw a 704 number and they told me they were from the Panthers, I knew it was going to happen. I was very surprised.

On Panthers trading 2nd round pick in 2011

I told them that I had to come in and prove myself since they traded a pick to come up to get me. I don’t want to make them regret it.

On the last time he returned kicks

Never.

On if he’s scared to return kicks

I’m not scared at all. It’s just going to take some getting used to.
