Clausen spoke about being drafted by the Panthers:
On getting drafted by the Carolina Panthers
I'm so excited to be a part of the Panthers organization. I just want to tell you that you guys made the best pick in the draft, and I’m going to make you guys proud.
On what the last few hours have been like
It’s been a dream come true. I always said I wanted to get picked as high as I could but everything happens for a reason. I couldn’t be happier to be a Carolina Panther. I’m going to be there Thursday, I think they are going to bring me in and just get right to it and start getting to work.
On being surprised that he fell to #48
To be honest I didn’t think I was going to go anywhere, whether it was the top 10 or first round, second round, third round. I just wanted to hear my name called. My agent has been talking to a lot of people, but at the end of the day, everything happens for a reason and I couldn’t be more excited than I am right now.
On if he talked to Coach Fox
I definitely did. He called me. He was really excited. He told me they were trying to get up to the 32nd pick, but it didn’t work out. He’s really excited to have me on the team. I told him I can’t wait to get there and start to work and help the team and the organization and do what I can to help the team win.
On the quarterback situation
I’ve watched Matt Moore play. I know a lot about Matt Moore. He played at Hart High School in California, the same division as my older brothers. I know a lot about him. He’s a great quarterback. I can’t wait to get there and meet him and start going to work with him.
On his goals the first year
My goal is to get the playbook as soon as I can and as soon as the coaches allow me to get it. My goal is to try to be the starter from day one. Whatever the coaches want me to do, I’m going to do it to the best of my ability. At the end of the day, if I’m good enough to play, then I’ll play. If not, I’ll do everything I can to help the team win.
On advantage to being in a pro style in college
I think it’s going to help me tremendously being in Coach Weis’ system. Coach Fox told me the Panthers have the system that I’ve played in for the past three years at Notre Dame, so I’m real excited about that. I’m going to hit the ground running and do everything I can to help the organization win.
On how hard it was to sleep last night
Not really. My family and I sat around, watched TV, had some food and went to bed. There’s nothing I can do other than sit back with my family and wait to get drafted. That’s what I did. I couldn’t have ended up in a better spot, and I’m really excited right now.
On feeling pressure
I’m so excited. Obviously I wanted to go as early as I could but I’m in a great situation at Carolina. I keep saying it over and over again, but I can’t wait to get there and start to get to work.
On ESPN/Gruden comments
That is the nature of football. I make mistakes, other guys make mistakes. At the end of the day, you have to come together and get better each and every day and each and every week. You have to get better on the practice field and during games. I had a good time with Coach Gruden. He helped me tremendously. I think he texted me a second ago. I thank Coach Gruden for helping me.
On differing opinions concerning his leadership ability
I think I’m a great leader and teammate. You ask all the guys on the team and they love hanging out with me and being around me and my family. I don’t know everything that was said but it’s over now and I’m a Carolina Panther. I couldn’t be more happy and excited than I am right now.
On his motivation to prove people wrong
It’s frustrating sometimes. It’s definitely going to be in the back of my mind every single time I step on the field, every time I step into the facility to work out and watch film to make me that much better. But, it’s a dream come true and I just can’t wait to get there.
Was there a specific spot last night where you thought you were going?
My agent was telling me some teams wanted to move up. The Steelers wanted to make a trade and try and get into the top 10, I heard the Redskins maybe wanted to pick me at four and swap with St. Louis. There was a bunch of different things my agent was telling me but at the end of the day I was just sitting back not paying too much attention just wanting to get my name called.
On getting drafted by Carolina
Today I was really excited. Actually when I got the phone call I was playing pool with a bunch of my buddies and my brother handed me the phone and it was Coach Fox – I was really excited.
On ties to Charlotte
I have never been to Charlotte. I flew to Charlotte once on a connecting flight to South Bend.
On the call from Coach Fox
I was playing pool with my family and friends and the phone rings my brother Rick screamed at me and handed me the phone and it was Coach Fox. I wasn’t watching the draft I was just playing pool waiting for my phone to ring. I was down in Palm Springs with my entire family and my grandfather who lives there. My grandmother passed away about a month and a half ago so I decided not to go to New York and just be down here with my grandfather.
On Golden Tate
There is no doubt in my mind that Golden can play at this level and make a very big impact.
On Steve Smith
I can’t wait to play with Steve. I’m trying to get his phone number right now so I can call him and tell him how happy I am right now to be a Panther.
