Police: Actor Robin Williams Dead at Age 63 after Hanging Himself
UPDATE: Authorities say actor Robin Williams committed suicide by hanging himself. Police say Williams was found with a belt around his neck in a seated position. He was found by his personal assistant inside a room in his home. Police also say Williams' wife had already gone to bed when the hanging happened.
Toxicology reports will not be available for several weeks and police are not saying if drugs were in the room with Williams' body.
CNN -- Comedic actor Robin Williams died at his Northern California home Monday, according to law enforcement officials. Williams was 63. Williams' wife and press representative both released statements Monday confirming the death.
They say the actor had been battling "severe depression of late."
Marin County Communications says they received a 911 call around 11:55 a.m. reporting a male adult had been found unconscious inside his home in unincorporated Tiburon, California. Officials confirmed the male was Williams. He was pronounced at 12:02 p.m.
Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, released the following statement, "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin's Family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."
The Marin County Coroner's Office suspect "the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia," according to a statement released. Officials say a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.
