Arrest Made in 2013's First Murder

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested a man responsible for the first homicide in 2013.

Homicide Unit Detectives have identified Dontae Torrance, 19, as a suspect in Tuesday's East Charlotte homicide.

Police responded to a call for service in reference to an assault with deadly weapon with injuries in the 8700 block of Goldfields Road. When officers arrived on scene they located two males, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.  Both victims were transported to CMC-Main where Benjamin McDaniel was pronounced deceased.  The other victim in the incident, Jerik Simmons, is currently in surgery.

Detectives believe the victims were conducting a drug transaction.  Dontae Torrance and another suspect were seen fleeing on foot.

Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Mr. Torrance without incident. Detectives have charged Mr. Torrance with Murder, Attempted Murder, Conspiracy, and Obtaining Property by False Pretense.
