Charlotte Parents Send Kids To Charm SchoolCHARLOTTE, NC - Charm and etiquette schools are seeing a resurgence throughout the Queen City. When it comes to teaching kids simple manners, many parents need help. Now some are turning to old school tricks to teach their kids a things or two about southern charm. An old-fashioned charm school may sound out-dated, but with a growing number of kids tuning in to see reality shows like "Honey Boo Boo" and "Jersey Shore" some parents are at a loss. Local mother, Rachael Jones says she's worried about her kids imitating what they see on television, "The copycatting, that its appropriate to burp and fart and that it's hysterical." Karen Conklin is another local parent who is worried about her daughter's table manners, "The way she ate, slurping at the table." Which is why parents are turning to people like Leshaune Tisdale with The Academy of Charm & Etiquette for help. Tisdale says we need put the brakes on the issue now, "It is worse then ever, we've lost the art of manners." The academy's curriculum includes traditional dining and social etiquette classes but also adds a modern twist by teaching electronic manners; all of which are social skills that Tisdale says are diminishing and are essential to kids success, "The most outrageous thing is the disrespect, going out into the world your going to have a tough time being successful because you don't have a clear understanding of how you should conduct yourself." A big issue that psychologist, Dr. Bilal Ghandour credits to the growing popularity of reality television, "They immediately try and imitate what they've seen on television, they take these messages and use them." Tisdale says the longer this behavior goes on, the more detrimental it will be, "Before you know it, it's the norm, so right now we are all paying the price." Conklin says she is hopeful that the charm school programs will do the trick, "When she has a home of her own, the presentation and proper skills." And just after a couple of sessions, parents are beginning to see that there's still hope for bringing back some gold, old-fashioned southern charm. Etiquette classes start at $40.
