Church Treasurer Arrested After Embezzling $70K
STANLY COUNTY, NC - A local church treasurer has been arrested for drafting over $70K in unauthorized checks from her church.
The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office says that the appointed church treasurer, Barbara W. Hatley, had drafted multiple unauthorized checks on the church’s checking account in her own name.
On February 21 representatives of the West Oakboro Baptist Church reported a possible embezzlement, after they discovered several unjustified expenses while reviewing the church’s financial records.
During the course of an investigation, evidence was found to indicate that Hatley had misapplied and embezzled church funds in excess of $70,000.00 over the course of several years.
An arrest warrant for Hatley was obtained for the charges of Embezzlement and Malfeasance of a Corporate Officer. Hatley was arrested on February 27th and processed at the Stanly County Detention Center, under a $50,000.00 secured bond.
