Controversial Park Opens In Union CountyWAXHAW, N.C. - After a two year battle, a controversial park in Union County is finally open. copened today, but some things haven’t changed. It still has neighbors across the pond and community members split. Wayne Dewar’s house sits right on Walden Pond. There’s just one problem with this picturesque setting, it’s across from a 27 acre park that he and other homeowners have been fighting against for the past two years. Dewar says his and other homeowners concerns were ignored, "It was almost like this park was rammed down our throat."
Still, many neighbors are gushing about the new addition. Kristy Maher says everyone was excited about the opening. Another Marvin mother, Jacquie McCann agrees, "It’s such a bonus to have nature to go and play in."
Still Dewar says he’s concerned about the risk, “There’s no body watching this park on a regular basis. Who's going to keep kids from wondering in and what's the liability going to be?"
While noise and crowds were not an issue today, local homeowners on this side of the pond fear that it will be in the future. And that's not all, Dewar says safety is a top priority and that still needs to be addressed, "If you don't have your hands on your child, it's pretty easy to wonder off to this lake.”
Jacquie McCann is just excited about the new opportunities the park provides, "We have a lovely barn to do some events; we are talking about movie nights and youth group things.”
Marvin Village Council Member, Lanny Openshaw says everyone agreeing is far fetched, “Unfortunately I learned a long time ago you can never make everybody happy."
The park was approved in 2010 at a cost of just over a million dollars. Marvin-Efird Park does not have competitive sport fields or lights.
