Report: South Carolina Colleges Have Highest Tuition In South
ROCK HILL, SC - The cost of college tuition is up everywhere, but especially over the State line! An education report finds South Carolina's public colleges and universities cost more than in 16 other southern states. These girls graduated in May, but are spending their last weekend together before going into the "real world." Jessica Foxworthy and her friends were roommates and best friends at Winthrop, Jessica didn't want to go anywhere else. "For me, it was something, I didn't compare costs anywhere else, I knew I was going to go to school in SC, and Winthrop was the only place I looked at." Data from the Southern Regional Education Board found in the 2008-2009 year, South Carolina colleges and universities were around $8,000 a year and around 4,000 in NC and GA. Christie Strople graduated from Winthrop, "It does shock me, just because I feel like, when I think of Charlotte and the cost of living in NC seems higher, as a student living here, so it's interesting the tuition costs were higher here." We compared the cost per semester at UNC Charlotte and Winthrop for the 2010-2011 yearper semester. We found UNC Charlotte at close to $2,500 a semester and Winthrop at $6,000 a semester. Part of the reason for the higher tuition costs in SC, State Lawmakers are not funding higher education as much in SC as they do in states like NC and Georgia. Tuition at UNC Chapel Hill will cost about $4800 for the upcoming year. At the University of South Carolina in Columbia, tuition will cost more than $8,000. |
