Kannapolis, NC – Kannapolis firefighters responded to an afternoon house fire Christmas Eve.

The house fire was in the 900 block of Klondale Avenue off of Bethpage Rd. Units arrived on scene within just a few minutes to find smoke coming from the attic of the home.

The home suffered fire damage in the attic and an exterior wall. There was also smoke damage in other areas of the home. The American Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing for the family, who was at home at the time. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The cause is still under investigation. It appears to have started around the outside of the chimney.  Statistically, more than one-third of Americans use fireplaces, wood stoves and other fuel-fired appliances as primary heat sources in their homes. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the fire risks when heating with wood and solid fuels.

The United States Fire Administration offers several safety tips for burning wood. People should have their chimney or wood stove inspected and cleaned annually by a certified chimney specialist. People should be cautious not to put decorations or flammable materials arond the hearth. The United States Fire Administration also suggests to leave glass doors open while burning a fire, to allow enough air for combustion.
