RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Some North Carolina lawmakers have given the go-ahead for possums to be excluded from state wildlife laws so the animals can be used in a 'opossum drop' holiday event.
The bill is aims to preserve Brasstown's New Year's Eve celebration that includes the lowering of a captured possum at midnight.
The bill exempts possums from state wildlife laws from December 26 to January 2. It excludes possums from any regulations relating to its capture, treatment, or release each year. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have tried to stop event.  PETA says is the drop harms possums, even though they are lowered down slowly and later released.
The bill will be considered by the full House next week.
