CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Sunday marked 16 years since a Charlotte college student vanished while studying in San Francisco.

Kristen Modafferi disappeared in 1997 at the age of 18.

A Providence High School graduate, Modafferi has just moved to California.

Her disappearance led to the Kristen Foundation, an organization that provided financial assistance to families searching for missing loved ones.

Kristen Foundation Founder Joan Scanlon-Petruski said the organization has helped many families since Kristen went missing.

"There's always hope," she said. "[There have been] situations...we've seen recently with people being found alive after many years [of] being held captive. That's always a possibility."
