CHARLOTTE, NC - Dogs in Charlotte are getting tattoos. Taking your dog to the groomer no longer means a routine cleaning; pet tattoos are the newest trend that’s sweeping through the Queen City.
Spring flowers, butterflies, thunderbolts; you name it, local pets are getting it. Jessica Law is the owner of The Dog Salon. She says a pet tattoo is just another part of creative grooming, “Dogs will get happy birthday tattoo or one for Mothers Day; sometimes it is like a treat.”
The Dog Salon groomers have done everything from flame tattoos to a panda tattoo on a poodle. Groomer, Lori Chatelain says this craze shows no signs of slowing down, “Some of them do it every time they come in; they just seem to enjoy it."
Pet tattoos are airbrushed designs created with a stencil. The airbrush technique allows pets to get new ink every week. A basic tattoo starts at five dollars and can go as high as $20 or more.
Heather Himes is a groomer and the owner of a dog named Techno who loves to get her fur colored and get tattoos. She says airbrushing allows you to personalize your pup, “It gives you a way to customize your dog; they're so relatable to you. It kind of gives you way to put your signature on them."
It’s not just about the owners, Heather Himes says Techno loves it and just can’t get enough, “She poses for cameras, flips her ears, she loves the attention.”
All of the products The Dog Salon use on the pets are animal safe and non-toxic. The tattoos are temporary and wash off. For more information about pet tattoos or other creative grooming services visit The Dog Salon website.
