GASTONIA, N.C. - 20 Gastonia Fire Department firefighters battled an apartment fire just after 8 a.m. on Sunday morning on Mountainbrook Drive.

The Gastonia Fire Department said that when they arrived on the scene, a one-story set of apartments had smoke showing. The fire started in a kitchen of one of the units due to food being left unattended on the stove, but spread to the walls, attic and porch of other units.

The fire damaged three apartments and completely destroyed another.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.
