RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Kay Hagan and Thom Tillis won their respective primaries for U.S. Senate in North Carolina. They didn't have to make many changes in their campaign strategies as they started to campaign with their fall election now a reality.

Unofficial results show Tillis defeated seven other Republicans on Tuesday by earning 46 percent of the vote, more than the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff. The incumbent Democrat Hagan won comfortably over two lesser-known opponents. Libertarian Sean Haugh also won his party's primary.

Tillis and Hagan focused their comments after the primary on each other's records and said they were beholden to certain groups. For Hagan, Tillis said it was President Barack Obama and Majority Leader Harry Reid. Hagan said Tillis works for special interests.
