CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Parents, teachers and community leaders from across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area attended a press conference on Thursday to petition state leaders for higher teacher pay.

Aim Higher NC launched a petition to show support for raising teacher pay and their efforts has garnered more than 25,000 signatures. The petition comes after a op-ed piece by former NC Governor Jim Hunt urging lawmakers to raise teacher's pay to the national average over the next four years.

North Carolina ranks 46th in the nation in teacher pay with an average salary nearly $10,000 lower than the national average.
