Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte area is home to nine major hospitals, which serve more than one million people annually. Combined, the city's two major hospital systems employ some 25,000 people in Mecklenburg County. Regionally that number is more than 44 thousand people.
Health care is big business in Charlotte. Speaking of Charlotte's health care industry, Dr. Yele Aluko with Presbyterian Hospital says, "Its no longer much of a secret that the health care in Charlotte is excellent health care, its superior health care."
Dr. Aluko also says there is cutting edge medical research happening in Charlotte daily. In terms of cancer research, the new Levine Cancer Institute is expected to lead the way regionally. It's based in Charlotte and will serve as a think tank, to pool the expertise of every Oncologist in the Carolinas HealthCare Systems family of hospitals. Dr. Jean Chai says, "We're developing a phase one clinical trials program. These are drugs in the earliest times of development. These are programs that you'd typically have to travel outside the state to get to."
It's just another example of what's good about Charlotte.
