RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) — Jasper County is negotiating to buy property for a regional airport that officials say will have longer runways and help economic development in one of South Carolina's poorer counties.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports county administrator Andy Fulghum says if the sale goes through, the county will likely ask Beaufort County to help pay for and operate a new airport. He says it could take a decade to build.
The existing airport in Ridgeland has a 2,700-foot runway. The county has been studying sites that would have space for a runway nearly twice as long.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and South Carolina Aeronautics Commission support a new, larger airport for Jasper County.
