Man dies in boating accident on Lake Greenwood

CROSS HILL, S.C. (AP) — A Laurens County man has died in a fishing boat accident on Lake Greenwood.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reported that the accident happened near the U.S. Highway 76 bridge across the lake late Friday morning.

Laurens County Chief Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek says the victim was 38-year-old Jerry Lee Bowers Jr., of Cross Hill.

Cheek says Bowers and a friend were fishing in a 12- to 14-foot boat when it started taking on water. One of them turned to get the tackle box and the shifting weight let water into the boat.

Cheek says the friend tried to get a life jacket to Bowers because he was not a swimmer but he went under the surface and never came up again.
