Beach setback line moved seaward on Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — It will be easier to build closer to the beach in an area of Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head ( reports about a dozen homeowners reached an agreement with the state's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management this week.

The old lines would have meant property owners faced greater restrictions in building structures larger than 5,000-square feet.

The state has agreed to use more recent erosion information in setting the new lines, moving some of them 50 feet closer to the ocean. The setback lines are reset every eight to 10 years based on erosion rates.
