BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Patrons of the Beaufort County Library turned in more than 1,700 overdue books, DVDs and other items last month when the library was offering amnesty on paying fines.
But the Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/K1cBHi) the number of items was less than library officials expected. The library may have to hire an auditor to recover about $100,000 worth of missing materials.
The library had items missing from 3,000 accounts when the April amnesty started. As people returned the items, almost $7,000 in late fees were waived.
One person had back fines of $222 while another turned in books several years overdue. That patron not only renewed his card but got one for his daughter.
