COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Top Democrats from around South Carolina are endorsing an Horry County attorney in his bid to represent the state's newest congressional district.
U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, former U.S. Rep. John Spratt and state Sens. Vincent Sheheen and John Land announced their support Tuesday for Preston Brittain.
Former Gov. Jim Hodges and Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela are also supporting Brittain.
Three other Democrats are seeking that nomination, and there are nine Republican candidates.
Last week, Democratic state Rep. Ted Vick dropped out of the congressional race after his arrest on drunken driving and weapons charges. Myrtle Beach state Rep. Thad Viers abandoned his bid for the GOP nomination and resigned from the Statehouse after his January arrest on charges he harassed an ex-girlfriend.
