NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Almost two decades after the Charleston Naval Base closed its gates, the city of North Charleston is announcing plans for reusing the massive 10-story hospital on the property.
The hospital once provided services for tens of thousands of active duty and retired military along the South Carolina coast.
North Charleston officials are announcing plans for the building Friday.
It's located in the heart of an area in the city that has slowly been undergoing redevelopment since the Navy sailed away after the base was closed in a round of base closings.
The city bought the property at a General Services Administration auction earlier this year for $2 million.
