Bluffton woman gets 2 years for embezzlement

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — A Bluffton woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for embezzling more than $140,000 from a property management company.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported ( ) that 41-year-old Christie Linares worked as a bookkeeper for seven years for a commercial property management company in Bluffton.

Prosecutors say the embezzlement began in 2010 when the owner moved out of the area and Linares was given authority to sign checks.

Prosecutors say authorities learned in July that Linares used company credit cards and the company checking account for personal expenses.

She pleaded guilty Thursday to breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

Linares must serve three years of probation after her sentence and must repay the money.
