COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A Columbia police officer has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says 34-year-old Officer Michael Watson was arrested early Sunday morning. Patrol spokesman Brent Kelly says city police officers found Watson sleeping at the wheel of his car at a traffic light in Columbia at about 2 a.m.

Police department spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons says Watson was off duty and was in his personal vehicle when he was arrested. Watson has been suspended without pay while authorities investigate his case, and it wasn't known if he had an attorney.
