BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — A group working to bring a deteriorating Spanish-American War battleship to Port Royal says a secret donor has pledged $34 million toward the effort.
The Beaufort Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/13S6t2p ) that even with the money, many hurdles remain.
Pete Richards, president of the South Carolina Olympia Committee, says a donor is willing to put up the money to bring the USS Olympia from Philadelphia.
The committee wants to make it the centerpiece of a museum along the Battery Creek waterfront. It is one of two finalists bidding to buy the ship. The other group would move it to Vallejo, Calif.
The Olympia Committee has yet to hear from the State Ports Authority, which owns the property. The next deadline in the bidding process is Nov. 1.
