Lancaster Shooter Takes His Own Life

LANCASTER, S.C. - Lancaster Police have confirmed that Sammy Baskins Jr. has taken his own life after officers tried to make contact with him. Police say Baskins Jr., the suspect in an active search, shot two women at separate locations forcing a local hospital to be placed on lockdown just before 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Springs Memorial Hospital was placed on lockdown after police were called to a shooting in close proximity. The lockdown was lifted at 3:35 p.m.

Police say Baskins Jr. shot two women at separate locations. At 12:28 p.m., officers responded to Penny Street in reference to a shooting. Officers found a 56-year-old woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

At 12:31 p.m., officers responded to the Palmetto Place Apartments on Pardue Street and found a 28-year-old woman suffering from a single gunshot wound. The victim was holding a small child when she was shot at close range, but the child was not harmed.

Lancaster Police confirmed that the 28-year-old victim is the daughter of Baskins Jr. The 56-year-old woman is the mother of the other victim.

Both victims were transported to Springs Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Charlotte. Both victims are in serious, but stable condition. The hospital was placed on lockdown as a security measure while both victims were being treated in the emergency room, according to Lancaster Police.
