NEWTON, NC- Over one thousand protestors showed up in Catawba County Sunday to protest a Maiden pastor’s anti-gay sermon that went viral. 50 deputies patrolled a crowd with demonstrators from all over the country. Earlier in the week, protestors were forced to move the protest from Providence Road Baptist Church the Catawba County Justice Center. The protest is in response to Reverend Charles Worley’s sermon saying that homosexuals should “die out”. "To see something like this come from so close to home... It really just hurt my heart that someone could have such drastic thoughts,” said Tiffany Boston, a Tarboro, NC resident. Other protestors support Worley. "We're not saying that they deserve hell or deserve to die more than anybody else, but you can't prove as a bible-believing Christian that sodomy was anything other than a capital punishment offense in the eyes of God," said Billy Bell, a Primrose, GA resident. Protestors who traveled from as far away as Pennsylvania and Florida say it's a civil rights fight that they'll battle until the end. "It's been 44 years since Dr. King died and here we are on the streets of a south city again asking for equal rights," said Dave Dlouhy, a Fort Lauderdale, FL resident. On both sides, there was one thing in common - they want to hear from Worley. "If you said it, you ought to have some representative of the church out here to explain what you said," said Bell. The Catawba County Sheriff says that someone made a failed attempt to burn down Worley's church Friday night. They set power lines on fire that connect to the air conditioning outside the church. |
