Arrest Made in 2005 Cold Case

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Police have arrested a Charlotte man for his involvement in the 2005 murder of Troy Kidwell. According to authorities, on March 26, 2005, officers arrived at a hotel on Sugar Creek Road in regards to an unresponsive male. Upon arrival they located Mr. Kidwell unconscious.

The hotel manager told officers that he had contacted 911 after he found the victim unconscious in his room and after the victim had failed to check out of his room that day. The incident was listed as an undermined death until the medical examiner was able to complete an exam. After conducting the exam, the medical examiner determined that Mr. Kidwell had been strangled. DNA collected at the scene matched Darryl McPhaul and a warrant was immediately issued. Mr. McPhaul was arrested on Tuesday and has been charged with Murder.

CMPD Homicide Cold Case Unit has reviewed 129 cases since it was formed in 2003.  This is the 37th cold case that has been cleared by the unit.  Out of the 37 cases cleared, 24 of those cases have been cleared by arrest.  For additional information, please reference CMPD complaint number 2005-0326-1117-03.
