CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The "Cranksgiving" charity bike race took place Saturday. Starting from Independence Park in Elizabeth, cyclists of all abilities were armed with a shopping list and raced across the Queen City.  With no set course, competitors had to quickly decide the best route between the selection of grocery stores they had to stop at on the way.

Canned foods, pumpkin pies and even frozen turkeys were carried back, totaling over $700 worth of food that was donated to The Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

Cranksgiving began life in New York City between bike messengers but in the 13 years since then it has evolved and expanded to other cities across the US. This was the inaugural Cranksgiving event in Charlotte and will ride again around the same time next year.
