Changing Face of Gun OwnershipCHINA GROVE, N.C. - 37 people gather in a China Grove home for an eight hour concealed carry permit class. Licensed instructor Ronnie Adcock started offering the course ten years ago. It is so popular, it takes people weeks to get into the class. And now, "There's quite a few more women coming out," says Adcock. "The final straw for me, probably, was Sandy Hook," says Kannapolis resident Lori Stadler. She is brand new to gun ownership and says, "I got one yesterday and I got the other one a couple months ago." When she was younger, guns were a deal breaker. Her husband Bruce says, "She wouldn't marry me unless I got rid of them." Lori says, "That's how I've come full circle!" And Ashley Currin, an attorney who works long hours Uptown, is getting her concealed carry permit for safety. "I go to a dark parking garage. I probably will carry it. Even if it's not loaded, it makes me feel safer," she says. The final hour of class is on the gun range. The women line up shoulder to shoulder with the men and practice shooting one handed, two handed and from different distances. They are the changing face of gun ownership: young, old, black, white, men, women. Adcock says the look may be changing, but his message is always the same. "It's all about saving lives, not taking lives," he says. Women made up nearly a third of the class we attended.
