LEXINGTON, N.C. (WGHP)— Two people were killed and one person seriously injured Friday after a car fell more than 40 feet off a Highway 52 overpass in Lexington.

Thea-Simone McDuffy, 19, and Shavalos Jameson, 21, both of Charlotte, were killed in the wreck around 1:15 p.m. at the bridge over Old Highway 64.

Trevon Rutherford, 16, of Charlotte, is listed in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and troopers said his injuries are considered life-threatening.

Troopers said a car headed south on Hwy. 52 somehow got into the median near the overpass, got airborne, hit the side of the bridge and landed on the embankment on the other side of Old Highway 64.

McDuffy was driving the vehicle, while Jameson was in the front seat. Rutherford was sitting in the back seat, troopers said.

Troopers said Friday night they still don't know how the wreck happened, though they have ruled out alcohol and drugs as factors.

Old Highway 64 was closed in both directions for several hours as the investigation and cleanup continued.
