Charlotte, NC  - Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates (CEENTA), one of the largest multi-specialty practices of its kind in the United States, celebrates its 90th birthday this year.

In 1923, three physicians became part of Charlotte medical history when they formed the multi-specialty group, Charlotte Eye Ear and Throat hospital on Seventh Street in downtown Charlotte. The 37 bed hospital was formed by the partnership of Dr. James Matheson, Dr. Clarence Peeler and Dr. Henry Sloan. This was the first multi-specialty hospital of its kind in the area, which also housed an optical department, laboratory and X-ray department. Two of many notable achievements in the practice’s early years include the first ever tympanostomy tube, commonly known as ear tubes, designed by Dr. Beverly Armstrong. Another notable achievement was the invention of the three-dimensional fluoroscope by Dr. Wendell Roberts. His invention helped to locate foreign bodies on X-ray.

“The hospital became regionally known as the place to go for any ailment related to the neck and above,” says Dr. Martin J. Kreshon, Sr., who joined Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates in 1960 from Duke University faculty where he has maintained a clinical professorship in ophthalmology. “The quality performance of the physicians working together to carry out Dr. Matheson’s vision has made Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates what it is today.”

Today Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates, still independently owned, has 600 employees and 14 offices located throughout the Metrolina region.
