Charlotte Lawmakers Hope To Break Liquor Laws

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--A bipartisan group of Charlotte lawmakers want to open A.B.C. stores in
Mecklenburg County this Labor Day. They say the extra day could help local businesses. But, some of those businesses aren't so sure.

Serving up spirits isn't expected to be a problem during the D.N.C. for Bartender Erik Woodall at Uptown Charlotte's Valhalla Pub & Eatery, "We'll plan ahead and get our stuff when we need it," he said. Woodall said he's already stocking up for the thousands of visitors expected in September.
That's why he doesn't support the House Bill that would allow stores to open "It doesn't make sense at all. They've never done this before. Why would they do it for politicians that are coming to town?" Woodall said

Meanwhile, just down the street, the General Manager of Picasso's Sports Cafe disagrees. He wants legislators to break the booze rules for the D.N.C. "It will give an extra day to get product in here.Where if they were closed on Monday. It helps when you are doing your ordering and that kind of stuff," said Dan Burgoon.

While some of the restaurant owners appear to be divided, some of the people we talked to on the streets today are in favor of the change. West Charlotte Resident Jeremiah Tucker said,"It's gonna bring more people to the town and boost sales and bring revenue in the city  therefore its an economic boost to everybody."

Woodall hopes this is just the beginning of some changes bubbling to the surface when it comes
to liquor law reform. "They need to keep it going and have it open every Sunday, holidays you know," he said.

North Carolina's Alcohol Control System requires A.B.C. stores to close on Sundays and five holidays including labor day.
